Use of scaling: Unit conversion
The concept of scaling also helps in unit conversion. Since for scaled figures, the scale factor defines how many times the size of a particular object increases or decreases, unit conversion is also established on similar concepts.
If 100 cm is equal to 1 meter
Then 500 cm is 5 meters.
Now if we know that an object is 8 meters in length and while drawing on the paper needs to be down-scaled 100 times, the scaled-down length of the object is 8 cm. This concept is followed for all kinds of unit conversion in which only the factor of unit conversion is important.
Normally scale is expressed in the form of a ratio, if the ratio is greater than 1 then the scaled figure must be greater than the original figure. If the ratio is smaller than 1 then the scaled figure is smaller than the original figure.
