How to find area of rectangular object?
What is an area?
The area of an object is defined in terms of unit squares; thus, the unit of area measurement is taken in terms of unit squares.
The area is the total space covered by an object in a plane. It is measured in unit squares and brings uniformity. Unit squares cover 1 unit area and the area of all 2D figures is a multiple of this unit square. If it is stated that the area covered by a triangle is 4 square meters, then we understand that the triangle occupies 4 times the area as compared to a square of 1-meter length or 4 squares of unit length that can be fitted into the triangle.
Area formula for a rectangle
Take a rectangle as given in this figure, it covers three units in length and 1 unit in width/height. If we count the number of unit squares that fit into this rectangle, we can see that the number is 3.
What happens when we double the size of the rectangle by width?
Here the rectangle covers the same 3 units in length and 2 units in width. Here six unit squares fit into the rectangle which can also be found by multiplying the length and width values. Thus the area of the rectangle is 6 square units.
